Civilization: Defined By Four Waves of Human Endeavor
First Wave: The Age of Agriculture lasted 10,000 years.
During this time entire populations were engaged in agriculture. In 1776, most Americans were tilling their land. Today less than 2% of
Americans are farmers, but that trend is now reversing at lightning speed. Even city dwellers are learning to grow their own food.
Local farmer’s markets and CSAs are ‘ cropping up’ in every city and town.
Second Wave: The Industrial Age began in 1769 , when James Watts patented a version of the steam engine that had practical value in a wide range of industrial applications including mining, milling and mechanized land transportation. Millions then migrated to urban manufacturing jobs.
Third Wave: The Information Age took off in the 1950’s as digital technology, international phone service, T.V., satellites and the internet ushered in an era of worldwide communications. Alvin Toffler shared his visions in The Third Wave (’84) & Future Shock (’71). And today?
Fourth Wave: The Age of Personal Empowerment is upon us.
Vibrant wellness; longevity; enlightenment; ethical economics; universal education; home schooling; self–sufficient living; eco–literacy; free communications; corporation–as–community; global stewardship. These trends are emerging all around us. This is the Next Wave.
